Water is the one of the main substances that keep all living organisms alive. Everyone needs water, & some of us take it for granted. You wake up & get a drink of water. You think nothing of it. You play out side, you get tiered, you get some water without a second thought. But there are places where some people, children, wake up and are lucky if they get a drink of water before lunch. Water is precious. Whether we realize it or not.
Of all the water in the world, 2.5% of it is fresh water. Of that 2.5%, 68.9% is frozen in glaciers, 30.8% is under ground water, & only 0.3% is available. So pretty much, only 0.3% of the worlds water is available for drinking.
Let's look at it differently. Your body is made up of about 50 to 60% water. So half of your body is water, would you say that it is important? Your blood is made up of 83% water. With out water your wold be a sac of bones and dried tissue. Water is important, don't take it for granted.
Looks like you did a little research for your post, John. If it is true that only 0.3% of the world's water is available for drinking, that would help us all understand why it has been said that water is the next "oil" for our country and in fact our world. Did your statistics also break down where the water was found, as in how much was in each continent? That would be interesting information. Just like the world's food supply is not necessarily evenly distributed, perhaps the world's water supply isn't either. I can tell you first hand that the water supply in parts of Africa is extremely limited. Well, perhaps it is more accurate to say it is extremely unavailable! For instance, the country of Rwanda is largely made up of volcanic rock, much like the islands of Hawaii. Somehow, places like Hawaii are able to drill wells for drinking water, but it seems to be just too expensive to do so in Rwanda. The well companies there say they can't afford to replace the drill bits if one is broke, and the chances of that happening when drilling through volcanic rock are huge. So, what's the answer for getting water to people in places like that? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThere is a new invention i think it is called the " smart board ". It captures dew and filters it and it has a hose that people can get the water and carry it back with little to no effort.
DeleteJohn - Win sent me a link to a billboard (maybe what you heard of as a "smart board") that does just what you said. It uses water from the air to provide water to people below, all the time advertising something! I think it's a great idea, especially in places like Rwanda where it is so hard to drill wells. The air in Rwanda is moist enough for this to work, I think.
